While they no longer reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, aren’t moving out of the Washington, DC area anytime soon. Their youngest daughter, Sasha, has two-and-a-half more years of high school, so the Obamas recently purchased the Kalorama neighborhood house they have been renting since January.
Built in 1928, the brick Tudor-style mansion was renovated in 2011. (Incidentally the Housefax Report shows that the fire department was dispatched in March 2011 to deal with a natural gas leak on the premises.)
The property now has 9 bedrooms, 8 ½ bathrooms, a finished basement, and spacious outdoor areas for entertaining and relaxing, as well as for parking. The interior is subtly decorated in shades of white, gray and beige with the occasional pop of color. The reported purchase price is $8.1M.
Conventional wisdom argues that buying a home doesn’t really make financial sense if you plan to sell within five years. Of course, there’s no reason the Obamas would have to sell just because their daughter graduates. Plus, there are other reasons it may have made sense for the former POTUS to buy instead of rent.
Here’s more about the residence the Obamas now call home.
